Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
